Updated: Jul 19, 2021

If you're teaching an ancient Egypt unit for the first time, or if you are looking for some fresh and digital-friendly lesson plan ideas, your students will fall in love with Virtual Field Trips! Virtual field trips are an interactive and engaging way to bring social studies to life.

Educator, Alesa K. shared: "My students love these lessons! In the beginning of the year, they all said they hated social studies and now it's their favorite. Your lessons are so high quality."

I love hearing the impact that an engaging and meaningful lesson can have when it comes to changing a student's perspective on social studies. Here are 4 virtual field trips that will take your ancient Egypt unit to the next level.

With today's technology, we can take geography up a notch with satellite imagery using Google Earth. Take your students around the world to learn about and explore: Upper & Lower Egypt, the Nile River, Nile Delta, Mediterranean Sea, the Sahara, and the Red Sea. This digital activity incorporates drag and drop map skills, and Google Earth to view these geographic locations up close!

Most students have seen pictures of the pyramids, but with this virtual field trip, students can view these amazing sites up close using the 360 degrees views provided in Google Earth! This virtual field trip incorporates informational text to build background, video, and visuals to bring history to life.

If you are going to study Egypt, it's important to discuss the Queens of Egypt as well. Hatshepsut was the first female to reign with full authority as pharaoh. In this digital activity, students will travel to Deir el-Bahari to learn about and explore Hatshepsut's mortuary temple, as well as Thutmose III's and Mentuhotep II's temple ruins. Gain a greater understand of ancient Egyptian temples through this interactive activity.

Take your students to the Valley of King's where Egyptologist Howard Carter discovered King Tut's tomb! Your students will be able to explore around and inside the tombs of this ancient burial site.
