How to Teach Your Elementary Economics Standards with Ease

Updated: Apr 5, 2022

It is never too early for students to begin learning about economics. This primary economics unit guides students through topics such as the difference between wants & needs, goods & services, producers & consumers, choice, cost & benefit, saving & budgeting.

Most state standards provide students with an age-appropriate overview of key economic concepts. I've put together a comprehensive ready-to-go unit that includes both print and digital components to make this a great way to incorporate cross-curricular learning while covering the many different economics standards.

What's Included:

- Printable Poster Guides (can be displayed digitally)

- Student Fill in the Blank Booklet (corresponds with the posters)

- Student Mini Book (corresponds with posters)

- Wants & Needs PowerPoint

- Goods & Services PowerPoint

- Producers & Consumers PowerPoints

- Reading Passages

- Activities

- Graphic Organizers

- Scenario Cards (3 different sets)

- Assessment (EDITABLE)

Posters & Student Booklets

The posters can be printed, but can also be displayed digitally using a projector. The posters serve as a guide as they answer questions and provide examples. Students can follow along in the student booklets.

Topics Include:

- Wants & Needs

- Goods & Services

- Producers & Consumers

- Income

- Saving & Budgeting

- Choice

- Cost vs. Benefit

PowerPoints

This resource includes three separate PowerPoints. Each presentation provides picture examples and a statement explaining each one.

PowerPoints included:

- Wants & Needs

- Goods & Services

- Producers & Consumers

Reading Passages:

This resource includes two reading passages. Two differentiated levels are provided. Reading passages include "What is a Producer?" and "Consumer Rights and Responsibilities." Please note that informational text is often higher level due to vocabulary terms.

Scenario Cards:

This resource includes 3 sets of real-life scenario cards to help your students practice what they have learned.

Set 1 covers situations regarding saving and budgeting.

Set 2 covers situations of consumer rights and responsibilities.

Set 3 covers situations of wants and needs.

Activities & Graphic Organizers:

This resource includes center activities such as sorting pictures for producers & consumers, or goods & services. A wants vs. needs and personal savings plan is included. Students will also analyze the needs of a country, and will determine all the ways in which they are consumers each and every day.

Assessment:

I have included an assessment that is completely EDITABLE. This two-page assessment includes True/False, Multiple Choice, Short Answer, and making determinations concerning consumer rights. You can change, add, or delete any of the questions to better fit your student's needs.
