Winter Holidays Around the World Virtual Scavenger Hunt

Take your students on a winter holidays adventure around the world! Think Virtual Field Trip + WebQuest! This activity is geared for 5th-8th grade, and is perfect right before winter break, or as a supplement to a world geography unit. This activity is LOW PREP to save teachers time and energy lesson planning during the busy holiday season. Most of the materials are just print and go!

Students work with partners or a team to visit 6 winter holiday destinations and attractions around the world. With each destination, students use some of the cool features of Google Earth as well as various websites to explore and gather information. Students complete a destination ticket sheet where they demonstrate their ability to locate an answer to a question with efficiency, as well as integrate information using words and visuals. Once each destination ticket is complete, students must record the location on the map provided within their passport and check their answers with the teacher to receive their next destination ticket.

All answer keys are provided, a grading rubric is included, as well as 5 extension worksheets that dive deeper into the destinations. The extension printables work well for early finishers or as a wrap up activity. This activity involves very little prep!

Students visit and learn about the following:

  • Natal Luz in Gramado, Brazil

  • Nuremberg Christmas Market, Germany

  • Gavlebocken (Goat), Gävle, Sweden

  • Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, Finland

  • Giant Lantern Festival, San Fernando, Philippines

  • Rockefeller Center, New York, USA

Just a side note, there are many wonderful winter holiday destinations and attractions around the world. The six locations included are not meant to be an all-inclusive list, but rather provide students an opportunity to explore several destinations around the world.

What’s Included:

  • Teacher Set Up Instructions

  • Grading Rubric

  • Ticket Labels (label manila envelopes to stay organized)

  • Destination Tickets (6 destinations included, all student instructions are included on the sheets)

  • Passport (students label destination on the map)

  • Answer Keys (check student work before receiving next ticket)

  • 5 Extension Sheets (dive deeper with research, vocabulary, reading, writing)

Students will use computers to complete this activity. Specifically, students will need access to Google Earth, and the websites provided. You will want to ensure ahead of time that the websites are not blocked by your school’s server. Also, websites change from time to time. I have done my best to include questions that will make sense even if a website changes, however I will also do my best to ensure that this resource is up to date and reflects any major website changes.
