5 Book Recommendations for Teachers to Read During Summer Break

5 Book Recommendations for Teachers to Read During Summer Break

I'm excited to once again share my summer book recommendations for teachers! Since I've been sharing summer books recommendations for five years now, I decided I would share 5 books! If you've read these books, or have recommendations, share in the comments below!

This Tender Land Book

I read this historical fiction novel a few months ago and loved the character development. This book feels like a modern classic. It takes place during the Great Depression and is a story about four orphans who were confined to the Lincoln Indian Training School. They find a way to flee and travel the Mississippi River on a life-changing journey. Some books feel rushed, but this book was just the right pace. I was captivated by the storyline and characters. This was a great read!

The Things We Cannot Say By Kelly Rimmer

This is a World War II historical fiction novel that follows two timelines. If you like books that go back and forth between the past and present, you'll like this one. The story begins in Nazi occupied Poland during WWII. The storyline intersects with the modern-day character who begins to uncover the truth behind a family secret hidden for years.

Poverty, By America

Did you know that one in eight children in the U.S. goes without basic necessities? This book by sociologist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Matthew Desmond takes a deep dive into poverty in America through a blend of data, history, and research. It's a powerful read that reads more like a novel than a textbook.

The Women by Kristin Hannah

I found this historical fiction book so eye-opening as it shines a light on all the women who put themselves in harm's way during the Vietnam War. When we think about whose story is missing from the telling of history, it's the women who sacrificed and made a commitment by serving in the Army Nurse Corps that often gets overlooked. This novel is based on historical research and the accounts of real-life nurses who served in Vietnam.

The Many Lives of Mama Love

This memoir was a page-turner. The author shares her story of how she went from suburban soccer mom to a convicted felon for stealing her neighbor's credit cards to fund her heroin addiction. She recounts tremendous obstacles that she had to overcome to rebuild her life and family. Her story is truly remarkable and speaks to the power of healing and hope.
